Overseas teams began arriving last evening for the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup semis and final starting Wednesday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Based on an official of Alpha, Puerto Rico Islanders was the first side arriving for the event, touching down last night. The other teams, Haiti’s Tempete FC and Trinidad and Tobago Champions Defence Force, are down to arrive during today.
Local football powerhouse Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United are the hosts and last week CONCACAF made a timely contribution towards the successful staging of the event.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United through the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has received US$30,000 for the staging of the games.
Defending champions Puerto Rico Islanders take on the host team on Wednesday in the first semifinal, with the other semifinal bringing together Haiti’s Tempete FC and Trinidad and Tobago Champions Defence Force.
The final and third place encounter of the tournament will be contested Friday.
Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover had told Kaieteur Sport that they have been improving and he is pleased with the progress seen. This is the first time in Guyana’s history that a club has reached the semifinals of the CFU Club tournament and the coach had said Alpha will be taking it one game at a time.
Dover is confident of turning in a good performance and while not making any predictions, expects his team to go the distance. Alpha’s management has been encouraging fans to come out and support the team on Wednesday and Friday at the National Stadium.
The semifinal winners as well as the third-place victor of this tournament will compete in the 24-team CONCACAF Champions League tournament.
