Dear Editor,
US President Barack Obama must be commended for the position he took during his recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington in which he re-affirmed US support for a Palestinian state approximating to the pre-1967 boundaries.
This effectively meant support for a return of all lands seized by Israel during the war of annexation and the cessation of all new housing settlements carried out by Israel on seized Palestinian lands which the Obama administration has been calling for but was spurned upon by Israel.
This is a clear act of defiance on the part of Israel and must be a source of embarrassment to the US administration.
The time is long overdue for the United States to remove its kid glove and deal much more decisively in its dealings with Israel if it is to be taken seriously as a genuine partner in the decades-old resolution of the Palestinian issue. In this regard, it could use its veto power in the UN Security Council in support of a UN Resolution for the creation of a Palestinian state.
The Obama administration has a historic opportunity to bring about a lasting resolution to the Palestinian question which is the root cause of much of the tension in the Middle East. This would send a clear signal to Israel that it cannot be business as usual if it continues to ignore Washington and take positions that are not in keeping with the expressed wishes of the United States.
Israel so far has been operating on the premise that might is right and to a large extent has been encouraged to adopt such a stance by the United States which has been providing military and financial assistance to Israel in its unjust occupation of Palestinian lands.
The recent decision taken by the two factions in Palestine-Hamas and Fatah- to form a unity government is a positive development from a Palestinian perspective even though it did not go down well with Israel and the United States, who apparently would like to see a politically divided Palestine for obvious reasons.
In the final analysis, it is for the Palestinian people to determine their internal politics which ought to be respected by the United States and the international community.
