RUSAL ‘spade beating’ threats…
The special committee that is in Guyana has completed the first stage of its investigations into threats allegedly made by a RUSAL manager against Guyanese Bauxite workers.
A statement issued by the company said that the team, which arrived here last week, has completed the first stage of this process including interviews, obtaining statements and meetings and is currently reviewing this data to prepare a report for the attention of International Alumina Division of UC Rusal.
On completion of this report and deliberations by the division’s management, the Company will issue a statement on the subject matter, the release stated.
The Russian company, UC Rusal, named a team to investigate reported management threats to workers following such a claim by the Guyana Trades Union Council. Their presence here is amid calls by opposition political parties for the manager in question to be fired.
Bauxite workers have accused UC Rusal’s Guyana bauxite operations General Manager Russian Volokhov of threatening to hit them with a spade.
Volokhov, a Russian, has since been sent on leave and is to remain off-site while the company conducts an investigation into the allegation.
But opposition groups and unions are calling for intervention by government and an independent investigation conducted.
The latest call came from the Alliance for Change at its weekly media briefing last Wednesday.
Contending that the rights of workers in Guyana are increasingly under attack, the AFC condemned the threat of physical violence used against bauxite workers, allegedly made by Volokhov.
The AFC contended that Volokhov must be dismissed. “The AFC calls on the PPP administration to abandon its incompetence and take a firm stance on this issue.”
