Hardia Singh is uncertain where her family will now live after an early morning fire destroyed their home at Lookabu, East Bank Essequibo yesterday.
It is unclear what caused the fire, but the occupants suggested that a faulty meter is to be blamed.
Singh, her two daughters-in-law and two grandchildren were in the lower flat at around 08:00 hrs, and had no idea that a fire had broken out in the upper flat.
The distraught woman said that a nephew who was on the road saw the flames on the roof.
“When the fire start, a boy been on the road and halla ‘look alyo house gat fire.’ When I run and I watch the fire start from the meter (it was attached to the wall of the upper flat near the veranda) and it start spread all over,” Singh stated.
While the Singh family was awaiting the arrival of firefighters, neighbours were assisting to extinguish the blaze.
But the house was already destroyed by the time the firemen arrived.
The woman said she told the GPL workers who arrived at the scene that the meter could have caused the fire.
According to her, the GPL employees told her the fire service has to look after that.
She stated that it will be financially challenging to reconstruct their home since her husband, Pradeep Singh, who is a labourer, earns a small income and the structure which was once their home was uninsured.
Besides losing the house which sheltered them for numerous years, the family was unable to save clothing and important documents.
