Kathleen D’Aguiar will be turning in her grave. Her creation, The Arawak Steak House above Demico House in Stabroek Market, has been turned into OMG in Sheriff street. Oh My God! It is a marketing, and worse, a culinary disaster. Get a grip, Banks Chairman Clifford Reis!
Kathleen ran a tight ship at Demico. Staff who did not perform were openly cussed out. The food was superb; the crab-backs an especial favourite of Bill and Mrs Bill, a big, big treat. Bill slept through Parliament today dreaming of them.
On finding the Arawak locked, he was directed to OMG! The runes were not good. Bill had seen the gaudy exterior and the empty car park in his travels but crab-back hunger took over. Inside it was a big barn kitted out like a Texas-style restaurant replete with ESPN on the screens and rock music. Plenty (too many)staff, four customers drinking beer. Still, hope and hunger springs eternal. Bill ordered two(!) crab-backs at $860 each and waited and waited.
Two more customers came but Bill still had enough time to write this column on the back of a piece of paper. It’s how he works.
Then they finally arrived and what a let down they were –tastless and greasy. Little relic of Arawak crabs. Oh My God!!Another Guyanese tradition ruined.
Banks was once the supreme marketeers. OMG is a disaster along the lines of Strand-the cigarette which made you a loner and Dasani, the Coca Cola water in England that turned out to come from a tap in the factory. Both bombed.
OMG is bombing too. Time for Banks to re-think its outlet branding from scratch. Clean up the Qik Serves, get rid of the greasy menu boards (the competition is now stiffer and cleaner), redo the Sheriff Street outlet ab initio. In Guyanese, start again.
Why not call it say The Arawak Steak House and why not serve decent crab-backs again. C’mon Clifford, stop Mrs D’Aguiar turning in her grave and give Bill his $2000 wasted back, please!
Pip!pip!
