Bourne’s 87th minute needle seal game one
By Franklin Wilson
Guyana’s Golden Jaguars’ needled their visiting Barbados counterparts in game one of a two-game Goodwill International Friendly series at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in Linden on Friday evening.
The final game of the series is set for the Guyana National Stadium, Providence this evening and the local side will be going all out to sweep the series ahead of the return games in the Land of the Flying Fish on May 27 and 29.
The Mackenzie Sports Club Ground was ablaze with exciting action on Friday evening as both countries stuck to the task of making life difficult for the other; a number of junior players being exposed ahead of upcoming Caribbean Football Union junior and senior tournaments.
In the case of the Guyanese who have been drawn in the Men’s Olympic Qualifying Group C along with host Cuba, Dominican Republic and Aruba, it was players who would be eligible for this tournament who were the main focus.
But Captain, England based Christopher Bourne, who has been a regular fixture with the Golden Jaguars ever since his debut, proved to be the difference between the two sides at the MSC.
The left back workaholic scored from a corner kick at the far post with 3 minutes to regulation time. It was a well deserved win for the young team under the guidance of Head Coach Hercules and Jimmy Mc Lean for the first time.
Hercules in reviewing the game told Kaieteur Sport that it was a hard fought game but a good result for Guyana.
“I think that we did pretty ok given the time that we have been together. Obviously more work needs to be done; our organisation defensively was good but not much was done offensively. We were also good on our free kicks.
The mood going into today’s game is very good, we will be seeking to expose more players as we look for another positive result.”
Some of the players on show for the national team today are Akel Clarke, National Under-20 Captain Colin Nelson, Vurlon Mills all Trinidad based; Brandon Beresford (USA), Ryan Crandon, Les Charles Critchlow, Kelon Cameron, Trevon Lythcott, Clive Nobrega, Anthony Holder, Calvin de Souza, Treyon Bobb (T&T), William Europe, Delroy Ferdinand, Manasseh Primo and Sheldon Holder among others.
Meanwhile, Alpha United preparing for the semifinals of the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup will engage a Georgetown X1 in another warm up game having won against a Linden combination on Friday evening, 2-0.
The Alpha/Georgetown encounter is the first of a triple header card this afternoon from 15:30hrs. The main supporting game is the final of the Guyana Football Federation Inter Association under-15 tournament between Georgetown and Bartica.
When the sides collided in the preliminary round of the competition, the city side prevailed 3-1 after the Barticians drew first blood.
The following Georgetown senior players are asked to assemble at the Stadium for 14:00hrs today ahead of the Alpha clash.
Sherman David, Eusi Phillips, Dwayne Ali, Royan Morrison, Jerome Richardson, Mervin Liverpool, Delroy Deen, Shawn Arthur, Glenorvan Edmonds, Jermaine Fraser, Kester Jacobs, Nedd Fraser, Solomon Austin, Llyton Ramsey, Sceyon Hope, Colin Edwards and Dorville Stewart. Coach is Kavin Pearce.
