Chetram Singh, 27, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice who had staged a daring escape from the Reliance Police Station lock ups after allegedly breaking out of his cell on Tuesday is back in court.
One of the charges he faced when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Magistrate Court was for escaping from lawful custody.
According to prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, Singh who is a known felon was arrested on March 12, last, after he was found in possession of a stolen electrical generator.
Singh and three others were initially nabbed in a car, PLL 3372. The generator which belonged to an East Canje resident, was found in the trunk of the car. It later transpired that Singh was the person who had placed the generator in the car trunk.
The man was arrested and placed in the lock ups as investigation continued. He subsequently broke out.
A routine check on the lock ups by ranks the next morning revealed that the prisoner was not there. A closer look revealed that one board was missing from the lock ups.
The bandit was subsequently rearrested. He was hiding out in the backlands and would come out at night fall and commit further atrocities before returning to his hiding place.
Singh was captured in an abandoned house on the creek dam in the bushes aback of Betsy Ground, not too far from where he resides. He apparently had contacts who would inform him whenever the police would raid and was always one step ahead.
On the day he was captured the police had moved in on his hideout in disguise. Three sets of plainclothes officers, using different modes of transportation, went and secreted themselves in the area. After surrounding the house the officers moved in and captured the wanted man, just as he was about to make his move.
In the house a number of stolen articles was found. Some belonged to a resident of Adelphi Settlement two villages away. Her home was broken into the night before.
Singh had escaped from custody on a previous occasion from the same station and was recaptured around the same location in similar manner. He is facing further charges on the other matters.
Meanwhile, two police ranks who were in charge of the station at the time of the prisoner’s escape— a female special constable and a male neighbourhood police rank— were dismissed and the female police special constable was charged.
