A series of missed chances was the primary reason for Old Fort’s 2-4 loss to GCC in the season opening game of this year’s Farfan & Mendes First Division Hockey Competition which was played on Friday, at the GCC ground.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 6th minute of play through the nippy Orland Semple, who tapped in from close range after a scrimmage in the circle.
Both teams were offensively minded with the speedy John Abrahams creating a few worries for the GCC defence, while Semple and his strike partner Kevin Spencer were also providing a lot of problems for the Old Fort backline.
However, Old Fort gained the equaliser when Abrahams collected a pass from the left flank in the 11th minute and smashed his shot past a surprised Michael Xavier between the uprights.
The half came with no team gaining the ascendancy as the scores remained level 1-1.
After the resumption, Old Fort missed a plethora of chances to take the lead with Abrahams, Dwight Sullivan and Dwayne Alleyne missing from close range, before Spencer found a space in the defence and slammed a shot past Mikhail Smith stationed in goal. That came in the 37th minute of play.
The veteran Ivor Thompson responded three minutes later with the goal of the match, dribbling past a host of defenders weaving to his left and right and finished clinically into the far corner with Xavier having no chance of stopping stranded on the near post.
GCC, however, never relented and attacked with much fervour and deservedly gained the upper hand with the talented Shaka Gill beating Smith through a neat deflection off a pinpoint accurate pass from Dwayne Scott. The strike came in the 60th minute.
GCC put the result beyond doubt after Semple reached onto a perfect pass from Rafael DeGroot and hammered a powerful shot past Smith in the 62nd minute.
No team managed to score after then and the final whistle sounded to give GCC full points. The competition continues next Thursday with a double header at the GCC ground.
In the first game, the national Under-21 tackles Old Fort at 15:00 hrs, while Hikers square off against GCC from 16:30 hrs.
