Dear Editor,
The statements which were made by Tony Vieira on Channel 6 about Bishop Edghill of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) were disgraceful, downright disrespectful and full of venom and should not have been aired on TV.
However, to close down that station – even though Mrs. Sharma apologised and pointed out that a mistake was made and assured everyone that something like that would never happen again – would be a travesty against freedom of the press and democracy as a whole.
Vieira has for a long time, been getting away with ridiculous nonsense, trying to be a politician, when he knows full well that he has absolutely no political base whatsoever and represents not a single political constituency in Guyana.
Mr. Editor, Mr.Vieira has long been a vocal critic of this government but in a venomous way, many times distorting the facts and twisting information to suit his confused political understanding of Guyanese reality; obviously he thinks that long-winded diatribe is a substitute for a forensic to-the-point analysis for political comprehension.
Bishop Edghill has a job to do which will bring criticism, controversy and create a feeling that he might be a supporter of this government and therefore, he has to work hard to dispel such feelings in the society as a whole. To deny that there are ethnic problems in our country which need immediate attention is like saying that a shark is not a predator or that a poisonous snake has no venom.
We have serious ethnic problems in our society where 40-45% of our population feels that the economic and political situation is not equitable and they will increasingly demand a just and deserving share of the “pie and fruits”, based on their contribution to the development of our dear country. Only the concept of some kind of “shared governance “ with a national conscience and strong ethics can alleviate the ethnic dilemma facing this country; the people of Guyana have to demand such changes in the near future.
Bishop Edghill should ignore the rabid and futile attempts of Tony Vieira to cast aspersions and denigrate his role in trying to bring some coherence to the vexing problem of ethnic relations in this country, while remembering that his position demands an even hand, an honest approach and a commitment to seek the truth, wherever it may lead him.
