The stage is set for May 28 when the Berbice Chamber of Commerce will host its one day Softball Annual Cricket Tournament and exhibition games, which will be a day and night affair.
This is the second year that the Chamber is organising this event. Last year the event saw some 15 teams participating including Commercial Banks, Beverage Companies, Telephone Companies, Guysuco, Nand Persaud and other corporate giants.
According to Secretary of the Chamber and organiser of the event, Imran Saccoor, this year the event will be bigger than last year and two exhibition matches were added to the day’s activities featuring the Country’s top 10/10 softball champs and the County’s premier first division (Albion vs Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club) teams all playing to offer fans entertainment in front of what is expected to be a good crowd.
Teams participating in this year’s tournament include Demerara Bank, NBS, Republic Bank, Ainlim and Geddes Grant Combined, Oldendorff Carriers, Media Eleven, Memorex Enterprise, Guysuco, Metro Office Supplies, Demerara Distillers Limited, GT&T and Banks DIH. Teams will be competing for trophies and cash incentives.
According to the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Rohan Murray, the aim of the tournament is to foster better relationships amongst corporate businesses and to provide an avenue where professionals can be involved in day of sports getting to know each other better outside of their respective offices. Also this event serves as a Public Relations event for the Berbice Chamber of Commerce.
The event promises to offer patrons much needed entertainment of a very clean nature and the Chambers is inviting families to come out and support and be part of the fun. There will also be attractions for the children and lots to eat and drink. Music will be provided by popular sound system. Digicel will also be offering patrons special deals and will have a booth at the Ground. The tournament was endorsed by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, The Guyana Softball League and the Regions 6 Administration. It has been over a year since there was a floodlight cricket at Albion and the Chamber promises a full evening of quality entertainment. Credit must be given to the CEO and management of GT&T for their role in reviving softball cricket in Guyana.
