The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission will create history as it takes a Day of Interaction to the hinterland, Lethem in Region # 9, after breaking new grounds in Bartica in Region # 7 and Wakenaam in Region # 3.
The activity which is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission and the Regional Administration, Region # 9 will take place at the St. Ignatius Sports Ground, Lethem, Rupununi tomorrow commencing at 08:00hrs with registration of athletes.
The programme will attract eight communities – Lethem, Culvert City, St. Ignatius, Tabatinga, Kumu, Quarrie, Moco Moco and Parishara competing in Football, Softball Cricket, Volleyball and Domino. Males and Females will participate in all the disciplines. Over six hundred athletes will be involved.
The Opening Ceremony which will include a March Past of athletes and officials, Welcome and Remarks by the Director of Sport, Mr. Neil Kumar and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony will commence at 09:30hrs.
At the Closing Ceremony, outstanding performers – teams and individuals will be rewarded with trophies.
Sports gears and equipment will also be distributed to individuals, teams, clubs, communities to assist in the development of sports, sportsmen and sportswomen in the region.
There will be no selling or consumption of alcohol inside the venue. No one under the influence of alcohol will be allowed to enter or stay inside the venue.
This Day of Interaction will be one with a few special activities (archery, darts, canoeing). The surprise will be our indigenous people’s innovation in sports. While they are not revealing their secrets, the planners are very particular with the special trophies they have requested.
Supporters are expected to turn out in their large numbers to ensure a successful and memorable Day of Interaction.
