Dear Editor,
Mother’s day has come and gone, once more, as the world honoured the divinity of a mother’s love with beautiful words, prayer, songs and flowers – a love that cannot be measured in dollars or precious gems for it’s priceless, a love no storm can drown, no earthquake can shatter – yet the sad, disturbing stories of the violence, intimidation and indiscriminative actions against women in our society and the world continues to unfold as each new day dawn on this earth.
The blood of the one who brings forth life as created by god into this world is spilled by the hands of man as his cruelty and callousness, uncontrolled and inhuman, continue to strike and woman, the weaker sex falls broken and lifeless at his feet.
He feels justification and satisfaction, the mental tools of his empowerment, for only against her can he feel strong.
Questions have been asked, time and time again. How did this all began, will it ever end? Why is one gender treated with great disdain and wanton cruelty, while the inflictor is excused in one way or another for the grievous wrongs committed against women? Has man lost his way so far in the dark wilderness that there is no turning back? Women have been suffering since the beginning of time and though she has come a long way from then to now, the suffering continues.
Will she continue to suffer until the end of time?
From this context, one has to look at the fact that the rampant violence against women that manifests itself in our society has it’s genesis in the behaviour patterns of young boys, that comes from the home, society and culture. The early upbringing, the discipline and the beliefs taught to the young males of this world, script the stories for the roles they play in life.
There’s a classic example of a young boy whose upbringing is centered on love and respect for the opposite sex quite in contrast with some of his class mates who regard women as sex objects and engage in perverted and derogatory talks about females.
The young lad requested of his mother 24 roses to take to school on Valentine’s Day for the girls in his class and another class. Questioned, “why for every girl”, the boy’s answer was, “I don’t want anyone to feel left out, girls must be treated special, it’s what you taught me.”
For a refreshing change to dawn in the lives of women, the church, home and society need to enlighten the impressionable mind of young boys, to teach and instill the discipline that would help them to understand and accept the rights and values of the opposite sex as they walk the road to manhood.
Hopes, the hinges that life hangs on, for many it falls and is broken, but the mind and spirit stays alive for women as the struggle continues, for all is not lost.
