Judges are to benefit from US$336,355 that will be allocated for the Supreme Court for the development of a “file document management unit system,” according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon.
At his post Cabinet media briefing, Thursday, at the Office of the President, Dr. Luncheon said that the retention retrieval of the enormous amount of information from the countless court proceedings that was captured over the decades of the high court will be upgraded with the implementation of the file document management unit system.
He said that the system will address the current issues of security of information, documents and their retrieval in an electronic form. The entire system will assist with the current backlogs of cases.
Dr. Luncheon added that the system is equipped with resources provided for its usage and for the training in the years ahead. The system is a continuation of a project that would ultimately see the records and the proceedings in the high court being electronically upgraded with recordings and storage.
Reports of files disappearing continue to plague the judicial system which is paper driven.
To alleviate the backlog of cases in the High Court, the file document management unit system is set to relieve judges from the tedious task of writing the evidence. This will not only secure the electronic recordings that can be deciphered and stored in multiple copies, but it will also speed up the court system tremendously.
As part of the Justice Sector Reform System personnel will be trained so that there can be a smooth transition in the system.
The programme recognises that over the years there have been several challenges in the justice administration system which have impacted on compliance with reducing the backlog of cases in the High Court, strengthening the administration system in the Courts and building the capacity of Judges.
