The most vulnerable and especially young couples, including fifty families within the Amerindian community of Capoey, in Region Two, are soon to be the beneficiaries of 50 homes as a result of another venture of Food for the Poor and the Roctheli Lil Red Foundation.
The project, which started in February, saw the rapid construction of the homes by contractor, Punraj Singh.
Project manager of Food for the Poor, Andrea Benjamin, said that the project costs $65.7M. With the new emerging community of Capoey, this is the fourth project of the NGO aimed poor families.
Toshao of Capoey, Valerie De Young, said that those 50 new homes are the best thing that could have ever happened.
“I am personally happy to have the village and even the village council working with families to get the project done.”
De Young said that she was also most happy about the water project that allows each home to gain accessibility to potable water.
The community also has a community centre and a furnished library which has seen the recent installment of 20 computers, along with solar panels, a nursery school and a chicken venture, which is providing jobs for 20 women in the community.
Benjamin said that the chicken project will provide those 20 women with 100, feed and medicine. The project would be done in a group and profits would be equally divided.
Women would also access additional training from personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food for the Poor Project Manager said.
Farming, lumber and fishing are most prominent in the Amerindian community.
