Dear Editor,
When Dr. David Hinds made the hasty, angry and superficial analysis that there was a “pouncing on Tacuma Ogunseye because he called on Guyanese to join marches in the villages to press for their inclusion in official decision making in a country they have inhabited for centuries. (And that (m) arches by Africans are now (deemed) Guyana’s weapons of mass destruction…” he is simply revealing how racist and skewed he truly is.
Where did he get this from? How come he (and Ogunseye) is redefining ‘democracy’?
One would think that ‘democracy’ is the rule of the people, which is determined via election. In America, India, England and Canada, one never hears of any other definition. Democracy is not only the rule of the people, but a ‘choice’ contingent upon issues, praxis, politics and philosophy.
If the WPA, PNCR and AFC can persuade the masses that the PPP/C is incapable of leading Guyana, then it is their duty to embark on this mission. Dr. Walter Rodney would have never settled for ‘second man’ position in the WPA. It is common knowledge that Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine was the more intellectual of the two, and that he also had a more peaceful philosophy than ‘Bro. Walter.’ Even now, the most apt person to lead a coalition opposition is Dr. Rupert, but will that be accepted?
One can hear the loud and repetitive ‘no.’ So, the problem here for Hinds and Ogunseye is not ‘issue.’ It is about ‘partisan’ politics, specifically, race. So Ogunseye’s critics are not conveniently ignoring the gist of his message. And since Guyana is already a civil society, where no one is treated as a political alien, then the Hinds factor is symptomatic of rancor and ill will.
So far, the man who vociferously (uncricketingly) championed the cause of Darren Sammy, has not seen it fit to comment on the
injustices meted out to Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Hinds should be reminded about Tony Becca’s pronouncement in 1996 against the WICB/selectors, when Chanderpaul was consistently being denied his rightful place in West Indies cricket. There again, one sees human foibles at work, and nothing else.
So Ogunseye is not seeing and responding to “the psychological, economic, cultural and political violence perpetrated on African Guyanese in the name of democracy.” He is simply conjuring up these. If he is seeing these, then he is insulting the Prime Minister, The Cabinet Secretary, the heads of the Police Force and the army. So yes, he must be seen and denounced for what and who he is.
For the Hinds and Ogunseyes of Guyana, there is a need for candour and the sooner the better. Also, it is totally disrespectful for anyone to categorize as traitors and opportunists, Afro Guyanese, who are with the PPP.
The most salubrious thing about the Hinds and the Ogunseyes is that they have virtually no audience.
