Lower Corentyne defeated West Berbice on first innings at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground in the opening round of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance / Berbice Cricket Board Under-19 Inter Zone tournament.
The result propelled Lower Corentyne into the competition final; West Berbice having to battle in the final hour to avoid total defeat.
Batting first after winning the toss, Lower Corentyne were dismissed for 203 in 56 of their allotted 65 overs.
The principal scorers were Kandasammy Surujnarine 48, Dominic Rikhi 41, Veerapen Permaul 25, Sasenarine Ernest 25, Shawn Pereira 25 and Shailendra Hardyal 20. Bowling for West Berbice, medium pacer Grisean Grant took 4 for 12 and Wagar Hassan 2 for 25.
In response West Berbice was bundled out for 119 in 50 overs; only D. Prashad 34, Nick Ramsaroop 30 and Grisean Grant 19 reaching double figures.
Off spinner Loyydel Lewis took 3 for 8 runs from seven overs and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai 3 for 19 for Lower Corentyne.
Batting s second time with a lead of 84 runs, Lower Corentyne reached 231 all out; Sasenarine Ernest leading with 76 (5×4), Shawn Pereira 57, Shailendra Shameer 30, Shailendra Hardyal 30 and Loyydel Lewis 28, all supporting well.
Wagar Hassan had figures of 3 for 43, medium pacer Akram Rahaman 3 for 44, and Renalto Grovesnor 2 for 30.
Set an impossible 315 for victory in two hours, West Berbice struggled to 50 for 8 when play was called off with Quacy Mc Pherson 18 and skipper Devashwani Prashad the only batters offering resistance; Motie claimed 4 for 16 (10 overs) and Lewis 3 for 12 (7 overs).
Lower Corentyne would clash with the winner of the Upper Corentyne and New Amsterdam/Canje match which is set for this weekend.
