The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says it has received numerous reports that unauthorised persons, claiming to be employees, have been visiting homes and giving wrong advice.
According to GECOM, these “imposters” are advising persons in possession of National Identification Cards that they do not need to apply for registration during the ongoing Claims and Objections exercise.
“This advice is grossly misleading. Only those persons who were issued ID cards after the 2008 House-to-House Registration exercise do not have to apply for registration.”
Accordingly, GECOM said, all persons with ID cards issued prior to the 2008 House-to-House Registration exercise, and who have not been registered during this exercise or thereafter, are required to do so during the ongoing Claims and Objections exercise, providing they will be 18 years or over by September 30, 2011.
“Such persons must be Guyanese citizens by birth, descent, naturalization, or are citizens from a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for one year or more. GECOM takes this opportunity to make it abundantly clear that all of its employees working in the field wear, and are identifiable by, certified identification badges at all times during working hours.”
The registration is key to the preparation of a final voters’ list for the upcoming General and Local Government elections slated for later this year. Failure to be on the list will automatically make citizens ineligible to vote.
