New entry requirements for visiting St. Maarten have exempted travellers who hold multiple entry visas for the United States.
According to LIAT, which operates 11 daily flights to the Dutch territory, more information on where to apply for the visa and the requirements is available under the services section of the Netherlands Foreign Ministry’s website – http://www.minbuza.nl/en.
On April 11, St. Maarten, under pressure to deal with an influx of illegal immigrants, introduced visas requirements for Guyanese and Jamaicans travelling to that country. It is estimated that around 5,000 Guyanese are living and working in St. Maarten, including on construction and in the tourism sector.
Several Caribbean territories have taken a hardline stance on illegal immigrants. Barbados and Trinidad especially have been accused of turning away scores of persons on flights, suspecting them of wanting to stay.
