Affiliates of the Guyana Chess Federation will commemorate the Independence anniversary with a FIDE rated tournament, this Saturday May 21 at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, 1 Hadfield St. Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
The nation’s top players are expected to match wits and the keen rivalry between former and current national champions, Wendell Meusa and Taffin Khan, respectively is expected to be the highlight of the tournament.
Further, chess officials disclosed that the event is another in a series being conducted by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) to allow unrated chess players to procure ratings from the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
The tournament would be conducted under the Swiss System and consists of eight rounds. Activities get underway with the registration period at 15:00hrs whereupon the first pawn would be pushed 16:00hrs sharp. The tournament culminates on Sunday May 29. Players will each be allotted a time control of 90 minutes per game plus an additional 30 seconds increment after each move. Recording of moves is compulsory and participants are required to walk with a pen.
Registration fee for senior and junior non-members of the Federation is $800 and $600 respectively, while trophies and cash prizes are at stake. The competition is sponsored exclusively by Demerara Distillers Ltd. (DDL) under its TOPCO Juices brand.
