Scottsburg United of Skeldon rose to the occasion to overcome the challenge and underdog status to defeat Tucber Park of New Amsterdam by 28 runs to win their first ever cricket title at the junior level when they carted off the Ricks & Sari Agro Industries / Berbice Cricket Board Under-13 competition. The victory has been as a result of Team Work despite the fact that they do not possess any major star players. They were able to play positive and were duly rewarded for their application.
Having won the toss and electing to take first strike, Scottsburg totaled 179 for 9 off their allotted 50 overs; several batsmen contributing.
Deon Esau and Mohamed Deochand led with 30 apiece, Joshua Rawlins hit 25 (3×4), Chevon Arnachalam 23 and Delon Roopchand 20. Bowling for Tucber Park off spinner Kerrie Henry claimed 3 for 41, Gavin Moriah Jr. 2 for 14, Michael Niamatali 2 for 28 and Melroy Henry 2 for 39.
Needing to score 180 off 50 overs to win, Tucber Park were bowled out for 151 off 39.4 overs despite a brilliant 73 from the talented Enoch Carmichael which saved them from total embarrassment.
Joseph Giddings 20 and Jason Andrews 19 lent some support to Carmichael in a losing cause for Tucber Park.
The main wrecker with the ball for Scottsburg was Joshua Rawlins with 4 for 40, Mohamed Deochand snared 3 for 31.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster described the tournament which commenced last year as highly successful and one which unearthed numerous promising stars for the future, the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Daniel Lewis, Kerrie Henry, Enoch Carmichael, Deon Esau and Mohamed Deochand.
Foster urged the players to be disciplined at all times and to remain focused. PRO Hilbert Foster complimented the Competitions Committee of the Board under the Chairmanship of Carl Moore for organising a tournament of the highest standard.
He also expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Carlos Rodrigues and the Management of Ricks & Sari Agro Industries for their sponsorship and commitment towards the tournament. The Company was assured that their investment was worthwhile and necessary. The PRO also expressed the hope that the partnership would develop into a long lasting one.
Carmichael was named player-of-the-finals while the players of champions Scottsburg United and runner-up Tucber Park were presented with Ricks & Sari hampers. The champions also took home a trophy.
