The first time Guyana advanced beyond the first round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) championship was in 1983, when the Terrence Archer led National team Coached by Mervyn ‘Pug’ Wilson eliminated Barbados in a home and away clash.
In the first match played at the National Stadium in Bridgetown, Guyana after conceding an early goal equalized through the artistic Neville ‘Zipper’ Johnson. At the final whistle the score was one all.
