A solid middle order performance propelled ECI to a comfortable 5 wicket series-clinching win over Alexander Village last Saturday at the National Park Tarmac in a limited overs softball cricket series match.
The ECI boys, fresh off series wins against the highly rated Kris International and tapeball powerhouse Tarmac XI, were eager to wrap up the best of three series, having drawn first blood at the NIS Ground a few weeks earlier.
The Village team seized the early advantage by winning the toss and electing to bat. Kelvin Bovell led the scoring for the Village boys with a typically aggressive 40 to propel his team to 159 off 20 Overs. Bovell was well supported by Nuna who got 22 and Brandon who played a blinder at number 9 to register 24 not out. Bowling for ECI Tariq Williams picked up 3 wickets and was well supported by Vishnu Merhai who picked up 2, while there was one wicket a piece for Skipper Rawle Munroe and Brian Sukhai.
In reply, ECI started shakily and at one stage were 3 wickets down with only 14 runs on the board. This brought the dependable Brian Sukhai and Seon Bovell to the crease, which saw the balance of the match shifting towards ECI. Sukhai played the anchor role and contributed 20, while Bovell took on the role as pinch-hitter with an aggressive 28.
However, the fall of these 2 batsmen in relatively quick succession brought Khalid Chin and Vishnu Merhai to the crease, which would prove to be the winning partnership. The pair added an unbeaten 124-run partnership for the sixth wicket to ensure victory for ECI with an over to spare. Chin led the way with a blazing 48, while Merhai supported with a measured 30. Bowling for Alexander Village Kerwayne Jackson, Brandon, K. Bovell and Timothy picked up 1 wicket each.
ECI’s Merhai was adjudged man-of-the-match for his efforts with both bat and ball.
