The 3rd Annual Cricket Academy organised by the Berbice Cricket Board and sponsored by the Scotia Bank was officially launched on Thursday last at the Board’s office, Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam.
The Academy, which attracts 60 students, is held for one week at the Port Mourant Cricket Club and is fixed for July. Scotia Bank is investing $150,000 in the Academy.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee and Public Relations Officer of the BCB Hilbert Foster commended the early launching of the Academy as another major milestone in the development of cricket in the Ancient County.
Foster disclosed that the Board strongly believes in the phrase “Catching Them Young” and as such has invested heavily in the development of all youths to make sure that they become not only proper cricketers but also rounded individuals who could represent Berbice at a high standard.
Senior Coaches Julian Moore and Winston Smith will be in charge of the Academy which will seek to improve the youths’ ability in batting, bowling, fielding and physical fitness.
Foster disclosed that a panel of Educators would be selected to lecture to the Academy members on a wide range of topics including HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuse, Importance of Education, Importance of Discipline and Public Manners.
Foster praised the Bank of Nova Scotia and its Marketing Director Ms. Jennifer Nelson for their partnership and sponsorship of the Academy, noting that the Bank was investing in, and securing the future of Berbice.
He also urged the Academy members and parents to support the Bank which would enable them to invest more in the future.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry also pointed out that the Academy is an important structure in the development of Berbice cricket while noting that players the likes of Dominic Rikhi, Surujnarine Kandasammy, Lloydel Lewis, Shawn Pereira, Kevin Ramdeen, Linden Austin and Romario De Jonge are all products of the Academy.
President of the BCB Keith Foster expressed his admiration for the current state of Berbice cricket, pointing out that the Ancient County is moving forward at an unbelievable pace and urged all concerned to work harder to uphold the high standards at all times.
The Scotia Bank/BCB Academy is set to take place from July 25 – 31.
