The continued development of youth clubs in the Ancient County continues at a brisk pace with the Berbice Cricket Board joining hands with Republic Bank (Guy) Ltd. to launch the 2011 Republic Bank / BCB Under-17 Inter Zone tournament.
This sponsorship marks the third occasion the Banking Giant is sponsoring the tournament for players born on or after the September 1st, 1994. BCB Public Relations Officer and main organiser Hilbert Foster disclosed that four teams participating will be West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne.
Players representing the areas will be selected by the BCB’s Junior Selection Committee. The tournament will see West Berbice playing Central/Upper Corentyne at the Albion Cricket Ground and New Amsterdam/Canje come up against Lower Corentyne at the Area ‘H’ Ground. The respective winners engage each other in the final, while the two losers face off in the third place game.
Matches start at 09:30hrs and will be played using the one-day two-innings format with teams batting first restricted to 55 overs each. Players including the likes of Shawn Pereira, Shailendra Shameer, Sharaz Ramcharran and Richard Ramdeen will be on show.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster complimented Republic Bank for their unwavering commitment and investment in youths and for widely investing in a success story as Berbice Cricket is at the top due to hard work and visionary leadership.
Republic Bank (Guy) Ltd New Amsterdam Branch Manager Imran Saccoor complimented the board for the outstanding work it has been doing while stating that the Bank was pleased to be associated with such a dynamic and progressive organisation.
Saccoor expressed his satisfaction with the hosting of the first two tournaments and hoped that another Devendra Bishoo would come through.
At the end of the presentation Mr. Saccoor handed over the sponsorship Cheque of $275,000. Meanwhile, the BCB is expressing gratitude to former Guyana Cricket Board Secretary Bishwa Panday for the role he played in renewing the sponsorship.
