Dear Editor,
With regards to last Sunday’s Mother’s Day observance, while it is appropriate to shower lavish praises upon mothers whose sacrifices, hard work and love help to feed, clothe, educate and make us what we are today, every day should be Mother’s Day.
We should not just treat moms well for one day giving them a time of their life’ with gifts and a day off from work to make up for neglecting her the rest of the year.
Last Sunday, in New York among the mandirs I visited, mothers were treated with gifts and flowers. They received praises for their hard work. The children prayed for their mom’s longevity in life, while showering them with unlimited love and devotion. The Hindu scriptures teach that the greatest seva in Hinduism is worshipping one’s parents. I am reminded by a pundit that “Whoever respects and treat their parents with reverence will forever be blessed”. He adds: “And if your mother is no longer in the world, then pray for her soul. She will shower boundless blessings upon you”.
The children held special programmes (poetry, classical dance, singing of relevant bhajans, etc.) to honor all mothers. They conducted the prayer service, sang appropriate bhajans, and served bhojan (meals) to the mothers who took a day off from the kitchen. It was the tradition among the temples to provide gifts and roses to mothers.
Some of the pandits noted that Mothers Day is an appropriate time to focus on the virtues of motherhood as described in the Hindu Holy Scriptures. Goddess Sita, the consort of Lord Rama, is considered as the Universal mother.
She was loyal and faithful to her husband. Mothers must conduct themselves properly because children take their cues from parents. Mothers must live a moral life and serve as ideal role models for their children. Women should model their lifestyles to that of Sita’s.
In my frequent travels, I observed how some children neglect their parents. Some even abuse their parents causing them to shed tears. It is well known that when their moms pass away, children express remorse and cry how much they will miss their mothers. Yet when their moms are alive, they ignore them.
Mothers have done a lot for their children and are deserving of a special day to pay tribute to them. Readers should be reminded that the greatest profession of womanhood is motherhood which is crucial for the growth and development of a family. Mothers know the pain of bringing forth a child in the world. They nurse their children and exercise patience and caution in raising them.
They are the first to wake up in the morning and the last to go to bed and make every effort to meet the needs of children. They feed their kids before they eat. Their work is never finished. They think about us perennially, not just for one day. They worry about us all the time.
It is our moral obligation, therefore, to treat them with respect and love for the entire year. Our gratitude and affection for them should not be concentrated on only this one special day to alleviate feeling of guilt for neglecting her for the rest of the year. Let every day be Mothers Day. Show eternal affection, reverence, love and respect for all parents and elders.
