It was a night characterized by stunning knockouts and premature stoppages when semifinal action concluded in the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) 2011 Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Novices Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Saturday evening last.
Stephon Joseph (FYF) disposed of Keron Griffith (RHTJ) in just 22secs to register the fastest knockout of the tournament when the two squared off in their 118-124lbs contest, while Diwani Lampkin (FYF) disposed of Wendell Mohamed (CNA) in just 28secs of their 90-94lbs bout to continue the trend of early knockouts.
Jamal Eastman (PRBG) also continued his good showing with an emphatic 1:05secs second round stoppage over Elijah Insanally (HEBG) in the 70-74lbs division to book a place in last night’s finals.
Fighting in the 100-104lbs class, Andre Lester (RHTJ) almost took the prize for the fastest stoppage when he rushed out and clobbered Nichols to the temple with the first blow of the fight. He fell to the floor but bravely survived the mandatory count and re-entered the fray. The Harpy Eagles pugilist managed to stay around for another eighty seconds but finally succumbed to the onslaught at 1:23secs of the first round.
The other pugilists that successfully terminated their contests are 100-104lbs Andre Lester (RHTJ) over Michols Datt (HEBG) in 1:25secs of the first stanza and Antwan Branch (HEBG) against Ryan Harry (RHTJ) in 1:20secs of round one.
Novices 56lbs Kerwin Chapman (GDF) against Kelwyn Josiah (EBG) in 1:33 of two and Mark Marshall (GDF) over Stephen Chan (RWBG) in 33secs of one. 60kgs- Damon Simon (RHTJ) in 2:43 of 3 against Atto Gentle (GDF); Females 60kgs Isha Port (GDF) over Renatta David (PRBG) in 22secs of three; 60kgs Theresa London (FYF) in 1:15secs of one over Waneta Wayne (GDF).
64kgs Andrew Rose (GDF) over Calvin Burnette (RHTJ) in 1:34secs of the first stanza. 75kgs Omar Charles (GDF) over his gym mate, Orello Bennette (GDF) in 2:50secs also of the first round but for persistent ducking. There was one walkover decision after Anthony Narine (HE) opted to stay away from his 60kgs bout against Jonathon Fernandes (YABG).
Those fights that lasted the distance are 60-64lbs Kurt Allicock (FYF) who took a 3-0 decision from Kevin Mulling (HEBG); 95-99lbs Matthew Allingsworth (FSBG)-3-0 over Joshua Harry (RHTJ); 110-117lbs Quincy Boyce (FSBG) over Jamal Brisport (CNA) and 75kgs Mark Gillford (GDF) over Torrezea Tyron (RHTJ).
Twelve gyms are contesting for honours including Harpy Eagles (HE), Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Tiger Eye Boxing Gym (TEBG), Ricola Warriors (RW), Carryl Boxing Gym (CBG), Guyana Defense Force (GDF), Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), Rosehall Town Jammers (RTJ), Golden Grove Boxing Gym (GGBG), Five Star Boxing Gym (FSBG), Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG), Central New Amsterdam (CNA) and Young Achievers (YA).
Meanwhile, despite enjoying greater support of the crowd, army representative, Mervin Chapman was subjected to severe punishment from the very first round against Kelwyn Josiah (EBG). The soldier bided his time and rebounded in the second round swinging wildly. Josiah did demonstrated good technique but failed to thwart the attack. He paid dearly for this when midway into the second round a wayward blow landed smack on his temple and the referee jumped in with the mandatory eight count. Another onslaught followed upon resumption forcing the referee to call a halt to the contest. Josiah’s handlers protested mildly all to no avail.
Theresa London continued to show why she has been spotlighted for international duty, albeit in the aborted Youth Games, with a severe pounding over Waneta Wayne. The lanky boxer employed the right moves and strategies and literally breezed through her opponent.
The finals were contested last night and by now the respective champions would have been established. Results will appear in tomorrow’s edition.
