Badly chopped driver’s assailants still walking free

A family of Lot 236, Nigg Squatting Area on the Corentyne is calling for justice from the police since it has been nearly two months since a family member of theirs was badly chopped on his head and his alleged attackers are roaming free.
The man received chops to his head and has virtually been dependent on his wife, to do everything for him. Since he could not speak during the interview, his wife Latchmie Thimmarayan, spoke on his behalf.
On March 28, Subra Arawan, 43, also known as ‘Skidman’ was allegedly attacked by two men –both in their 20’s—while returning to his home from work. The men were consuming alcohol at a nearby shop and an argument between them and Arawan ensued.
According to his wife, one of the men struck Arawan on the head with a beer bottle. Shortly after, the other man, who was armed with a cutlass, allegedly chopped her husband on the head.
Police from the Albion Police Station arrived on the scene and arrested ‘Rambo’, while Milton escaped from the scene. He turned himself in the next day after which both men were released on bail. An investigative officer then took a few statements from the man’s wife and his son and promised to investigate the matter and deal with the attackers but nothing has been forthcoming since.
Thimmarayan said that she is not satisfied with the attitude of the police ranks who are dealing with the matter, or rather, seems not to be dealing properly with the matter. She said that the wounds her husband received were very serious.
“It was very serious because till in me husband brain was chopped; because fluid was leaking out in he brain already. He gotta go back [to the hospital] and do a next operation because them take out some bones in he head and cut he belly under and put the bones inside”, she said. “Me can’t really left he because the doctor said don’t let him fall down because only the brain now is there. There is no skull on top there”.
After the chop, she stated that her husband was admitted to the emergency section of the Georgetown Public Hospital and his condition was critical. He spent 24 hours on life support. She added that her husband is virtually paralyzed since he cannot do anything for himself.
“He can’t do what he does do; he can’t even bathe he skin and can’t talk”.
She is worried that the men were never prosecuted nor was the matter taken to court.
“Me would like the matter to go further because them can’t just damage me husband like that and nobody na come into the story”, Thimmarayan said.
“Them two come and go in so brave at the station and then they come out and walk independent and them na really get no questioning or them na put them in front court.
Her husband was the sole breadwinner of them home. He was a minibus driver. Her family is suffering financially as well as emotionally, she added.
When contacted for Kaieteur News, Commander of ‘B’ Division, Stephen Merai said that from speaking with the Crime Chief in ‘B’ Division, Supt. Ramsey, it was revealed that the police were not able to collect Arawan’s medical certificates, both from the New Amsterdam and Georgetown Hospitals. The medicals, he added, would have determined the gravity of the charges. According to Merai, a detective will be dispatched shortly to uplift the medicals, assess them and proceed to charge the two men involved.
