Disgruntled residents of the Amerindian community of Capoey, on the Essequibo Coast, are calling for a redress of a recent engagement involving members of the community and Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai.
According to information, the Minister’s unannounced visit and meeting with residents of Capoey, were intended to address issues of corrupt practices by village councilors.
Residents argued that issues tabled to the Minister in relation to the misuse of village funds, land application, house-to-house petition and the unaccountability of incurring revenues through village projects, were not properly dealt with by the Minister.
They said that they felt demeaned at the Minister’s approach to the issues. They described her approach as unprofessional.
According to frustrated residents, the Minister deemed these issues as ‘petty’, suggesting that they could have been dealt with by the village council body.
Information emanating out of the council’s general meeting, held earlier this year revealed that the councilors admitted that there were ‘problems’ within the body. It was further unearthed that the inappropriate misuse of village funds by councilors was prevalent.
There was the absence of receipts for payments and for revenues generated from the sales of basic commodities such as the sale of sand, one of the major revenue earners.
Reports are that the misuse of village funds by councilors also resulted in the failure of the council to undertake developmental projects in that Community.
In the general meeting held it was revealed by councilors that there were internal problems. Some councilors wanted to resign.
One resident said that the Minister refused to discuss sanctions for the councilors. Sixty-one residents of Capoey said they acted within the Amerindian Act, a strategy that was used previously. The farming community has 500 residents. Residents also cited favouritism among certain members of the council’s body.
