Bibi Salima Kharoum of Lot 19 West Ruimveldt Front Road Squatting Area, is now expressing thanks to the Heavenly Father for once again having her life spared yesterday when a route # 47 minibus crashed into her house.
Kharoum, who was fast asleep in her bedroom, was awakened by a “sudden impact” which was accompanied by “loud crackling noises”.
She then became aware that the roof of her home and the walls of her bedroom were coming down around her and it was not long that she became trapped between the rubble and her bed.
She told Kaieteur News that her grand-daughter was in another section of the damaged bedroom looking at a movie on the television when this accident occurred.
Her grand-daughter began screaming especially when she realised that Kharoum could not surface from the broken pieces of wood and zinc.
Public spirited persons along with neighbours rushed to Kharoum’s aid.
Meanwhile, the driver of minibus (BKK 1982) was said to be struggling to extricate himself from the damaged minibus, even as the passengers rushed out of the vehicle after it skated into Kharoum’s fence and tucked itself neatly into the middle of the woman’s bedroom.
The driver, whose name was given as “Jermaine” was overheard by this publication stating that he was proceeding in an easterly direction when he saw a dog lying on the roadway in his path.
On swerving to avoid hitting the animal, “Jermaine” said that he became aware that a grey motor-car was approaching from the opposite direction.
He said that as he was about to swerve into the corner to avoid a collision, his mini-bus wheel ran over a huge brick causing the minibus to swerve into Kharoum’s house.
He explained that he had no other option at that point in time.
The mini-bus was filled with passengers, and only a few sustained minor injuries, after the impact.
A few passengers were heard bickering about their belongings in the mini-bus “going missing” after they had rushed out and tried to ensure that they did not sustain further injuries.
Kaieteur News understands that one woman who was in the vehicle, hit her head and neck and was assisted out of the minibus, and when everyone was evacuated she went to locate her belongings. She said that she could not find her purse with money.
Kharoum, who was still in shock, was being assisted by her daughter and church-members to remove items in her home that were damaged and separate them from the ones which were undamaged.
Some of those who were gathered at the scene stated that they are of the opinion that the minibus driver was approaching the area with speed since there were skid marks on the grass and road.
However; one passenger stated, “No the driver wasn’t speeding, he was driving slowly.”
