President of the Alpha Football Club, Odinga Lumumba, who has been nominated by the Georgetown Football Association to run for President of the Guyana Football Federation when they hold elections for that post shortly, is seeking clarity on a number of issues in relation to the election process.
In a brief discourse with some members of the Media, Lumumba noting the prerequisites required for the holding of elections, whether in a country or organisation, questioned the lack of clarity on who are the persons eligible to vote in the GFF election.
He stated that there are too many grey areas and the GFF should come out and clarify this major issue.
The GFA nominee wanted to know what the GFF constitution said on the matter and for the organisation to make it public. He also stated that the elections should be postponed until all issues are straightened out.
Lumumba informed that the GFA had written the GFF seeking information on who was eligible to vote but has so far gotten no response. They have also written to FIFA Vice President and CONCAAF and CFU boss, Jack Warner on the matter and are still to get a response.
Lumumba said that Warner must shed some light on what are FIFA’s requirements for their affiliates in relation to ‘fair play’ in relations to the administering of the game, noting that there is need for transparency and in Warner’s position as a senior executive in the sport and a Minister of Government in his country, he is well aware of democratic systems and the need for same and cannot turn his back on this process.
He said that the process was flawed and there is some confusion which must be cleared up before the designated date. The GFF must spell things out.
He highlighted the process during the GFA elections and said that if the issues surrounding the GFF elections are not looked at, then it looks like a clear case of discrimination and FIFA have been known to expel members for this gross violation, hence the need to come straight and clear.
Quizzed on the way forward for the GFA, Lumumba said that Mr. Warner needs to pronounce and they are waiting on his response.
On another matter in relation to comments he made about barring two tournaments, Lumumba sought to clarify his statements.
He said that players and football should not be used as slaves where some promoters just do a bit for the sport around the time they hold their tournaments, but rather they should all year round play a role in the development of the game.
He sighted adopting a school of supporting a youth tournament or general youth development.
He said that he feels strongly that people come in make money and not give back significantly to the game. If they cannot then they should not be allowed to operate.
Lumumba also stressed the need for a Pro League and the need for players to be remunerated so they can focus on improving their game and the game of the country by extension.
He then disclosed that he has sought the permission of the GFF to start a league here and they have indicated that they will entertain discussions shortly.
