BILL COTTON/REFORM
Bill is getting older but he likes to keep up-to-date. This journalism trade is changing at the speed of light. New ‘flatforms’ as you Guyanese say, taking over from old. Papers are dying, the internet is and will be the King. Not many yet ‘get it’ in Guymedia. They put up their papers ‘pon de net unadulterated with no updates and wait for the readers to find them. They won’t. The alternative attractions are better.
Denis Chabrol and his Demerara Waves ‘gets’ it. He is a pioneer and Bill wants to salute him. For two years now he has been running Guyana’s first professional internet news service. Just as you are settling down to your tea in Tooting or Toronto, up pops a news alert on email to tell you ‘Four die in smash on the East Bank’ or similar cheery fare. Denis is an old hack. He has been round the track with GBC and AFC for many years. But he is an old dog who has learned many new tricks.
The audience wants the news now and in bite size bits not in long boring articles the next day. We are twenty-four hour news people now. We want it in text video and audio ‘as it happens’. Look up the live blogs on bbc.co.uk/news or guardian.co.uk.
Literally, minute by minute coverage of a match or a story or a crisis. Today Libya, Egypt and Syria. Some of it is sheer brilliance.
Denis is the Batman of Guyanese new media. His excellent new Robin is Kwesi Isles who has done the old media tracks as well and is a very able hack. Between them they make a formidable pair. They know a good story when they see one. Now they know how to find an instant pop up audience too.
But Demerara Waves is not just a tsunami of breaking news. There are features, podcasts and more. It is just what us cheapskates in the diaspora want instead of that nowexpensive Stabroek News daily fix.
Demerara Waves and Guyana swims worldwide.
Bill says support this two man band. They are the future. If you are a reader then find Demerarawaves.com and if an advertiser, and patriot give Denis your dollar. Bill suspects he is hovering up eyeballs in the Diaspora and in Guyana as more find DW.
Finally, Bill has seen the future of journalism in Guyana. It is called Denis Chabrol with his Man Friday Kwesi. Read them, support them. You’ll never have an excuse for news ignorance in or about your ‘mother’s land’.
