Guyanese can now benefit from entreating and exciting opportunities as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will officially be hosting its first National Drama Festival within days. The festival is scheduled to run until next month.
Chief Co-ordinator of the National Drama Festival 2011, Godfrey Naughton, at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports boardroom on Wednesday, told the gathering that the preliminaries for this competition began yesterday and ends on May 22, where all types of plays are eligible for presentation to the Ministry’s representatives.
He explained that the Committee which is responsible for the execution of this event is hoping to ensure that 16 plays are held at the National Cultural Centre during the competition (May 30 to June 5) which aims at pleasing the diverse crowd and having creative actors display their appreciation for the Arts.
Naughton added that the Festival serves to make the public aware of “the movement of young, fresh talent in Guyana” as it relates to drama and acting.
DIGICEL (Guyana) which is the major sponsor for this activity was represented by its Marketing Manager, Jacqueline James, who stated that her company is “thrilled to be a part of this venture” since DIGICEL aims to develop young people and since drama is an excellent choice and way of doing so.
James added that more than $1M will be “up for grabs” in prizes for the winners of the competition. The winning group will be afforded the opportunity of visiting Jamaica where the members would perform an act for the Jamaican crowd.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, explained that the Festival is “quite historical” and is a part of the Ministry’s idea of resuscitating national festivals in Guyana.
He said that this being the first National Drama Festival which Guyana would see, it is a “catalyst”.
A Policy Steering Committee and a Technical Committee over the past several months became necessary to ensure that it was quite a success when it became launched.
Kaieteur News was made to understand that the Ministry of Culture aims to let this Festival showcase the talent which youths have while serving as a high point in the theatrical calendar.
Minister Anthony envisages that other countries will be interested in Guyana even more and their citizens will want to visit this country, as part of the spin-offs of offering a National Drama Festival annually.
He added that the Ministry is currently “working at setting up a Theatre Arts School at the National Cultural Centre” where there can be a more permanent fixture for those interested.
This newspaper was told that this drama festival will be held every May when persons throughout the country can participate in if so desired and also benefit from.
