Despite their most strenuous efforts, organizers of the monthly ProAm boxing cards were unable to procure a suitable opponent to oppose Mandessa Moses on this month end’s championship extravaganza and the lanky fighter would have to undergo a further waiting period.
Moses was initially slated to appear on the card fixed for Friday May 27 against the only woman to register a victory over her, Barbadian, Wendy Allen but that bout had to be cancelled. The organizers then sought to match the Guyanese pugilist with a Venezuelan but those plans also fell through after it was discovered that the Spanish fighter hadn’t the requisite experience. Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) officials then intensified efforts to have a suitable replacement but they were futile forcing the abandonment of plans.
Intent not to shortchange boxing fans, the organizers have drafted in two additional bouts to compensate. Exciting amateur lightweight pugilist, Ray Sandiford will make his professional debut against Cecil Smith, while Edmond DeClou and Winston Pompey match gloves in a six rounds super middleweight shindig.
The two fighters faced off in an earlier edition of the ProAm cards and the fight ended in a draw. Both had felt that they had done enough to earn the decision. Since then DeClou had won a lopsided verdict over Patrick Boston in last month’s edition of the card staged in Linden while Pompey, who was also scheduled to appear on that card, was forced to sit out an injury to his wrist. As an added incentive, the winner of this bout will oppose Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in another card to be staged soon.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport spoke with Lennox ‘Pretty Boy’ Allen from his Brooklyn base last Thursday afternoon and he said that he is very confident coming into the bout against Kwesi ‘Lightening Struck Hitman’ Jones. The USA based Allen has recently signed a promotional contract with Boxing 360, a notable promotions group in the USA and trains out of the Trinity Boxing Gym, Manhattan under the expert tutelage of John Snow.
He said that he has commenced training even before the Jones bout was fully confirmed. “To date I have sparred more than 123 rounds,” said Alleyne. He also said that his two main sparring partners are undefeated heavyweight contender, Guyanese Ronson Frank and another fighter named Petter Qulin. “Jones had better come well prepared because I will be at my raging best,” warned Allen.
The two fighters were on a collision course for sometime now but the promoters have been unsuccessful in attempts to get them in the ring against each other. This fight promises to be a scorcher especially since Jones is on a high after defeating Gilkes for his first title.
During the signing ceremony three days ago, Jones had spouted confidence and promised to take the fight to Allen.
He had also said then that he is focused and is improving tremendously under the capable tutelage of George ‘Kanchi’ Oprecht.
The lanky Jones has also promised to add the CABOFE super/middleweight belt to the light/heavyweight accolade he won after defeating ‘The Lion’ recently.
Allen scoffed at Jones’ pronouncements and simply replied, “Talk is cheap. When we get in the ring Jones will get the chance to do as he said he would. I am only hoping that he walks with that courage,” said Allen.
The other bouts comprising the card will feature Kurt Bess against local heavyweight king, Mitchell Rogers for the latter fighter’s title while Dexter Marques and USA based, Elton Dharry clash for the CABOFE bantamweight title.
There will be no amateur bouts on the card nor will it be shown live.
Further, the organizers were forced to increase the admission price to $3,000 for ringside and $1,500 for the stands.
“The cost of this card is pretty prohibitive and we had no other option but to institute certain measures to retain its feasibility,” disclosed GBBC boss Peter Abdool.
The special passes provided for the regular ProAm affair will also not be valid for this month end card.
