In light of the upcoming national elections Monique’s Caring Hands Support Center has launched a “Soca de vote” programme to educate voters of the necessity to participate in elections.
Since the commencement of the programme in the latter part of April numerous residents in and around Georgetown have benefited.
When works in Georgetown are completed the organization will be moving to other communities including Mahaicony and Berbice.
“We have found that people do not understand election laws, they are unaware of the electoral process and do not know what role they should play in a credible and fair election,” Dawn Stewart, Founder of Monique’s Caring Hands Support Center says.
It was pointed out that the center is neither anti-government nor a political advocate for any political party contesting for election but a non-governmental organization interested in community building.
Stewart posited that when electing a leader or government as a whole voters should consider the issues at hand and the plans that will enhance their lives. Hence, the organization has designed a candidate issues forum where Presidential candidates will be seated together and given questions before hand to respond too.
She stressed that will not be a debate.
Besides community meetings, voters will be educated via texting, electronic and print media. Stewart noted that the organization is cognizant that there will be some challenges involved in disseminating information through the print form in many remote communities owing to a high level of illiteracy among adults.
Nonetheless, it is hopeful to co-ordinate with Amerindian leaders to help the organization achieve its objectives of getting people registered and the opportunity to vote.
Stewart stated that the organization has received positive responses from the main election body in Guyana, Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
She said that GECOM praised the initiative and commended the organization for being the first NGO to be involved in the electoral process in such a huge way. Another organization that would be engaged is the Ethnic Relations Commission.
The organization is currently coordinating with local artiste to develop a relevant Soca rhythm for the programme.
The parent company for Monique’s Caring Hands Support Centre is Caribbean People International Collective Inc. (CPIC). It is located in the United States of America. It is designed to promote healthy living among Caribbean people living in North America and the Caribbean
