David Granger is an enigma; a soldier turned intellectual turned politician turned wannabe President. Bill knows him and likes him but will I vote for him in October/November? Pass.
Bill saw him addressing a room full of members of the Guyana Manufacturers Association. One big question-what does Guyana manufacture? The elegant young man Clinton Urlin, who introduced him, runs Germans, the excellent creole restaurant in Tiger Bay (check in the post Clinton?) and the Chairman is from Banks Brewery. So Guyana makes cook up rice and malta then!!
Gerry Gouveia was there too—what does he manufacture and William Walker who used to manufacture satire in the Stabroek News but retired hurt when he realised Bill Cotton was funnier than him. Still a question over GMA is just the starting point.
Granger is naturally cautious and careful and thoughtful. You got to forget them qualities to run for office. So the promises came tumbling out—better security, better education and a better economy.
A rainbow broke out over the Peg-a-suss. Bill not been there for a while. Mr Badal it needs a coat of paint. And better sound proofing.
So as Granger was promising the moon, you could hear the seminar next door promising a rich energy future for Guyana. They were nearly as prolix as Pressie-to-be Granger.
Still he made a good fist of it in analysing the shortcomings of the current regime and how they showed up in dropouts from school, demoralised cops and soldiers and more.
But his three-point plan—it might have been a dance—veered on the over optimistic.
The Guyana Press Corps were there. Six or seven cameramen all in a line, all taking the same (wrong angle) shot. Some away from the camera too often.
Then the hacks and hackettes on one big table. No such thing as a free lunch but we all enjoyed the rubber chicken or trout laid on by the Guyana Soup and Beer Association. But too many of them were too busy on their crackberries to listen to the President who would be elect. None of them, not one, asked a question of Granger afterwards. Isn’t journalism about finding out things people do not want you to know? Bill will do some basic ‘How to ask questions’ when here.
All in all, the only thing that was manufactured this lunchtime was political spin. The furniture makers and rum barons were just dressing for an Election event. The audience far away from Badal’s boudoir. Politicians and the media go around in a bubble in the First World.
It rarely touches people. Hence the decreasing voter turnouts. Will that be Guyana’s lot for the General Election in October/November(Bill as always first with the news!).
Demand they come down your street. Don’t be a back-cloth to the media-political bubble.
Granger will fight an intelligent campaign—it is in his blood.
Will he and the PNC/R win after nearly two decades in the cold? You decide.
Pip!Pip!
