Forty-year -old Eusi Sandy, who was charged with illegal drug possession, appeared yesterday before Acting-Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on May 8 in Linden, Sandy had in his possession 50 grams of cannabis and 0.5 gram of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The defendant, who resides at Co–op Crescent Mackenzie, initally pleaded guilty but quickly changed his plea to not guilty when the charge was read to him.
Police Prosecutor Steven Telford stated that on the day in question, at around 21:30, the defendant was acting very suspiciously and was approached by a police on patrol. The court was told that the defendant ran away and was chased by the police who eventually caught up with him. A search was subsequently carried out and the items mentioned were found in a black plastic bag in the defendant’s crotch.
Telford said that Sandy was arrested and taken to the police station where he admitted that he had the substances in his possession. They were weighed in his presence, and then he was charged.
In his plea for bail, Sandy told Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry that “Meh gah five children and meh girl belly big right now.”
The prosecution objected to the defendant being granted bail, taking into consideration that it was not the first time he was caught with narcotics.
Sandy was remanded to prison and his matter was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court. His next court date is May 17.
