Dear Editor,
The inter-Religious Organisation (IRO), a body comprising representatives of all the major faiths and non-traditional religious faiths of Guyana takes serious umbrage with contents of Mr. Anthony Vieira’s commentary that was aired on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 on CNS Channel 6.
We have noted Mr. Vieira’s propensity to mislead the public and sought to put the dynamic, democratic, inclusive IRO into disrepute by making a number of inaccurate and misleading statements about the organisation.
The IRO evolved in Guyana as a body of inter-faith dialogue and was never intended to replace or substitute any other organisation.
At no time at all was the IRO set up to marginalise the Guyana Council of Churches. As a matter of fact the present Co-chairman of the IRO Bishop Juan Edghill was at the time of the formation of the IRO, the Chairman of a well functioning and active Guyana Council of Churches.
The functioning of the Guyana Council of Churches has nothing to do with the buoyancy and unmatched activism of the IRO
The IRO rejects statements by Mr. Vieira that the IRTV was a bribe offered by President Bharrat Jagdeo for their political silence and would like the public to know that the leaders of all the various religions are in discussions concerning the IRTV, including representatives of the Guyana Council of Churches and the Evangelical community.
The IRO has noted Mr. Vieira’s veiled attempts to create divisions amongst the various religions of Guyana. The IRO will not stand idle by and watch this happen.
Our objectives include safeguarding religious freedom which Guyanese enjoy. This country is noted for the acceptance and tolerance of various religions and Mr. Vieira would do well to observe this.
The IRO takes serious offence and calls on Mr. Vieira to, at the least, observe the slightest modicum of decency when addressing our religious leaders.
The IRO calls on Mr. Vieira to immediately issue a full retraction of his statement and a public apology. If not the IRO calls on the relevant authorities including the Government of Guyana and the Advisory Committee on Broadcasting to take necessary actions.
