National Volleyball club champions, Young Achievers, once again displayed their superiority when they defeated Castrol Strikers in four sets to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series to determine the top seed in the Demerara Zone.
The competition which is being organised by the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) to determine the top two seeds in the Zone was played on Monday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the West Demerara side prevailed 25-19, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-20 to take an important lead in the series.
The second game in the rubber is scheduled to be played on Saturday, at the same venue, starting from 16:00 hrs.
With both teams coming off a protracted layoff, the two sides exhibited a high quality of competitiveness with all four games keenly contested.
In the opening set, Castrol Strikers after a slow start begun to string together a series of impressive plays, especially from team leader Desta Hoppie and recently returned Carlos McAlmont, who thrilled the sprinkling of fans with some thunderous spikes and important digs.
However, Achievers marshalled expertly by the indomitable Randy Adams, Kapil Dev, Khemraj Singh and Christopher Ramsundar withstood the brief respite and rallied to take the set.
In the second stanza, Adams and company raised their level of play and enjoyed a comfortable advantage, before pulling away to take a 2-0 lead in the best of five match.
The arrival of Castrol’s inspirational leader Adolph Davis was timely and he led from the front, taking charge at the net to produce some telling spikes and blocks, while the team’s all-round level of play improved and they went on to take the set and set up an anticipated tense fourth set battle.
That was not to be as Achievers, mixing seasoned players with some of their under-19 standouts once again showed why they are a class above the rest and easily wrapped up the stanza and match for a series lead.
President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Lenox Shuffler speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that whole aim of the tournament is to determine the top two teams in the respective zone, adding that Berbice have already started their which is set to conclude shortly, while the DVA’s has just commenced.
“We are doing this to determine the top two teams that will represent us in the Inter-Club Competition which I’m hoping will include Suriname, French Guiana and possibly a team from Boa Vista in Brazil depending on funds,” Shuffler informed.
