Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup games continued over the weekend when Haiti’s Tempete FC hosted Trinidad and Tobago’s Caledonia AIA in their second leg match while Walking Boyz FC welcomed Puerto Rico Islanders to Suriname in their first encounter of this round.
Puerto Rico Islanders traveled to Suriname unsure of what would await them, having never played against Walking Boyz FC before, while Walking Boyz were hoping for an upset as Islanders have undoubtedly been the dominant team over the past four editions of the CFU Club Champions Cup.
Early on, the Surinamese club showed its spirit by dictating the pace. With the pressure Walking Boyz placed on the visitors, when WBC scored in the 48th minute through Clifton Sandvliet, the only surprise was that the first goal came in the second half rather than the first.
However, the Islanders were not about to lie down and in injury time, Jamie Cunningham equalised. Walking Boyz will travel to Puerto Rico on May 14th (Saturday) for the second leg of their tie in Round 2 of the CFU Club Champions Cup.
Caledonia went to Haiti with a 1 goal deficit due to an own goal in T&T and were hoping to make a difference in Haiti on Sunday night. They played to an amazing crowd in St. Marc and scored once.
The game ended 1-0 to Caledonia which meant that the teams were tied 1-1 on aggregate and kicks from the penalty spot would determine the winner. Tempete went on to win 3-2 and will now join Alpha United and T&T Defence Force FC in Guyana on May 23rd & 25th.
