Thirty-three-year-old Chandrawatie Singh of Bath Settlement, West Coast, Berbice, who overcame many challenges to successfully raise two daughters was named Berbice Mother of the Year.
Ms. Singh was honoured by the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and DTV-8 under their 5th Annual Mother of the Year Programme. Two runners-up were also named in Ms. Yvette Mc Bean of No. 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice and Ms. Haimwattie of Palmyra Village, East Canje, Berbice.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at the simple presentation ceremony on Saturday at the DTV-8 Office, New Amsterdam said that children throughout Berbice were invited to submit an Essay on the topic “My Mother the best in the World – Why I love her”.
A panel of judges headed by the Assistant Secretary/CEO of the Club Nermala Sewdat selected the winners.
Foster congratulated the mothers on being positive role models for their children and for teaching them right from wrong. Mothers, the long standing Club Secretary said are the best gifts anyone would receive in life and are always children’s best friends, role models and inspiration.
The RHTY&SC, he stated has been successful due to the hard work that parents especially mothers put into the development of their children.
Sewdat, who is also a teacher by profession, disclosed that dozens of children between the ages of 8 – 16 submitted Essays and expressed the Club’s satisfaction at the high level of entries. The Essay competition, she stated is held every year under the Club’s Social Outreach Programme as part of an effort to promote the value and importance of family life and parenthood.
She also expressed gratitude to the Management & Staff of DTV-8 for their co-sponsorship of the programme.
Mother of the Year Chandrawatie Singh expressed gratitude to the Club and DTV-8 for honoring her and making Mother’s Day very special for her. She stated motherhood was a God given responsibility that must be taken seriously.
She also praised her daughter Lakshmi for nominating her for the Award. Each of the mothers received a Mother of the Year Certificate and a special gift. West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle, Sewdat and Managing Director of DTV-8 Anita Rambarran shared out the prizes.
The Programme was organised by the Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 and First Division and Metro Female Teams.
