The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered an inquest into the vigilante-style killing of East Ruimveldt resident, Colin Clement Davis, which occurred two months ago.
Police had been requesting advice on whether to charge the individual who claimed to have killed Davis while the victim was attempting to break into a family property.
In March, Davis, of Avocado Square, East Ruimveldt, was clubbed to death in a Mandela Avenue yard. The incident occurred a short distance from Davis’ home.
Police said an occupant of the property admitted that he had struck the 48-year-old Davis with a length of wood after catching the man attempting to break into the house.
Investigators had recovered the alleged weapon as well as a crowbar from the scene.
The occupant reportedly told investigators that he was in the house when he heard a noise in the yard. He then went outside and spotted Davis in the yard. The resident allegedly dealt the intruder several blows about the body and called the police after Davis had collapsed.
He was detained but released while police sought legal advice on the matter.
Police reportedly found what appeared to be signs of forced entry, and said they had received at least four previous reports about burglars breaking into the Lot 759 property.
But police checks on Davis’ background unearthed no evidence of a criminal past. His relatives and neighbours also insist that he was no criminal. One woman said that he did odd jobs in the community and had been entering her home for some ten years without stealing anything.
Another neighbour said that the most she knew Davis would do was “raid the fruit trees.”
