May has been designated Blindness Awareness Month and the Guyana Society for the Blind and the Guyana Blind Cricket Association are collaborating to host a series of activities to celebrate the month.
During the month the two organisations will be hosting a series of activities including, an outreach programme in Linden, a domino competition slated for May15, a sensitisation workshop dealing with the People with Disability Act and a grand fun day. Other activities will include a chain of canes around the Public Building on May 31.
Throughout the month, various teams of visually impaired persons and volunteers will be having awareness visits to schools, taxi services and other business places around the city. Teams will also be on radio programmes and there will be an extensive coverage in both the print and electronic media.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Society for the Blind, Cecil Morris, said that his main focus will be to sensitise the public to blindness and its cause and effect.
“We also would like to get the message across that blindness is not the worst thing that can happen to you. There is life beyond going blind; a blind person can still contribute to society.” Morris said that it takes some time for a blind person to become comfortable in his or her situation.
Morris further stated that his organisation welcomes the People with Disability Act but feels that more needs to be done to make people aware of their rights. He also noted that business persons should take time to read and learn the act since some section of the act speaks directly to them.
“A lot of business people are not adhering to the act in parts which state that business places should be constructed to facilitate persons with disabilities.”
The Association’s President further lamented that he is grateful for the act since they have been pushing for the act to go through parliament. It was however noted that in years to come there may be the need for some changes.
Morris said his organisation will continue to educate their own about the act so that they will become more aware of their rights.
The Guyana Society for the Blind was established in 1950 but was made legal on October 8, 1955 and is sustained by its own fundraiser and a subvention from the Government.
