A fine half century by opener Mark Gonsalves guided South Essequibo to an 8 wicket victory over Leguan in the final of the Goodwood/Essequibo Cricket Board U-19 50 over competition which was played recently at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success.
Leguan batted first and scored 147 all out in 38 overs. Tatteshwar Chetram hit two fours and one six in a top score of 28, while Shazaad Razack supported with 22 (3×4,1×6) and Tulsieram Premnauth, who was the only other batsman that reached double figures, made 14.
National u-19 left arm spinner Anthony Adams bagged 3-28 off 8 overs while Albert Ramnauth picked up 2-25 off 6 and Javed Azeez 2-20 from 7 overs.
South Essequibo in reply lost Ricardo Peters (08) before Gonsalves and Vijay Surujpaul steadied the ship with a second wicket stand of 112. Surujpaul, who hit three fours and four sixes, was then caught at midwicket for a well played 47.
Anthony Adams (3 no) and Gonsalves, who ended unbeaten on 62 (3×4,3×6), ensured they were no more hiccups for South who ended on 153-2 in 34 overs.
Paul Williams and Shazaad Razack were the wicket takers for Leguan who received the runner trophy while South collected the winning prize. Gonsalves was given the man-of-the-match award.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, chairman of the Essequibo Cricket Board, Sheik Ahamad congratulated both teams for reaching the final. He also encouraged the players to continue training and thanked the sponsor for their support. (Zaheer Mohamed)
