A driver is in custody at Wales Police Station after his Toyota Allion PMM 4315 collided with two pedestrians, killing six-year-old Althea Martin and severely injuring her father, 50-year-old Cedric Clement in Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara last evening.
Althea Martin was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital and her father was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was admitted.
He sustained severe lacerations to several parts of his body and even lost a finger as a result of the accident.
According to reports the man and his daughter were walking on the road when the driver of the car lost control and slammed into them, dragging the youth under the vehicle and pitching her father into a nearby drain.
The man, who gave his name as Cedric Clement also known as Lenford Martin is said to be a funeral home employee.
In pain, he recalled that he was walking with his daughter when he saw the car coming towards them.
The man said that all he can remember is that he ended up in the trench while his daughter ended up under the car.
He told this newspaper that the driver of the car fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended by police.
Relatives disclosed that the injured man recently moved into Patentia Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara after leaving Berbice with his daughter and son approximately one month ago.
One relative told this publication, that Clement was returning home with his daughter after collecting her from his brother in Sisters Village, for her to attend school today.
