Dear Editor,
Under normal circumstances I would not respond to K. Mangal since I have recognized that he is deliberately misleading the public in his now regular attacks on my ability. Therefore in the interest of setting the records straight I must make the following comments:-
1. Dr. Hillaire in his feeble response to Minister Anthony did submit that the decision to omit the Senior Players was an Executive Policy directive whilst he deliberately avoided the question of criteria used.
2. Mr. Mangal should have sought the advice of WICB Director Anand Sanasie who along with fellow Director Chetram Singh must have been at the meeting that decided on this policy direction, and as a consequence are altogether guilty of conspiracy to get rid of our local heroes, and others, in a most clandestine fashion. It is not for Mr. Butts to answer but these two Directors since Mr. Butts and his panel must carry out the directives/policies of the Board.
With regards to the Guyana selection of youngsters, I wish to remind you that the decision approximately 3 years ago was a Policy Direction of the Guyana Cricket Board, having recognized that some of the older Players were performing under pressure to remain fit and competitive. We also recognized that a number of (emerging) young Players were displaying great potential and had to be exposed to the higher level of competition.
As a consequence we released some of the older players such as Mahendra Nagamootoo, Neil McGarrell, Reyon King and Lennox Cush (with Cush being retained for the 20/20 Tournaments only). (Note that V. Nagamottoo migrated since 2004 or thereabouts)
Our inclusion included, V. Permaul, D. Bishoo, Brandon Bess, Christopher Barnwell, Assad Fudadin, Leon Johnson and Royston Crandon all of whom represented the WI at either the Senior or “A” Team level during the process.
It is noteworthy to mention that unlike the WI Board Policy (as you suggested) we kept on the team the following Senior Players, S. Chanderpaul, R. Sarwan, T. Dowlin, E. Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine.
Those were expected to mentor and guide our young hopefuls. At the time of our initiating the policy we anticipated and published the fact that we did not expect our team to excel before another two or three years had elapsed.
Meanwhile, the team won the Caribbean T/20 Championship along with the individual
achievements listed above.
This presentation therefore reflects a true and accurate account of the facts; and not the mischievous, deliberate fabrication of lies you have concocted to satisfy you and those you support thirst for blood, whilst misleading the public.
Claude Raphael.
