Sarwan will play in practice match at DCC
By Sean Devers
Local cricket fans will have the chance of seeing the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul bat against Pakistan today at Bourda five days before he is expected to face the tourists in the first match of the two-Test series at Providence on Thursday.
The 36-year-old Chanderpaul, who scored 54 the last of his 129 Tests against Sri Lanka last year December, will want his bat to do the talking today after clearing the air on several issues concerning his none selection for the recent ODI series against Pakistan and with entrance fee being free today, a full house is expected as Guyana face Pakistan in a two-day match from 10:00hrs today.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been named in a group of 15 West Indies players to play a practice match from today before the West Indies first Test 13-man squad is named tomorrow afternoon.
However, Guyana’s Manager Carl Moore confirmed that the left-hander will represent Guyana today while the other 14 Regional players, including Ramnaresh Sarwan and Davendra Bishoo will play the two-day practice game at the Demerara Cricket Ground.
Former West Indies under-19 left-handed opener Trevon Griffith should have his first taste of senior level cricket for Guyana, while the left-handed pair of Narsingh Deonarine and Leon Johnson will want to get among the runs on what should be a flat Bourda track as they hope to re-claim their places in the West Indies side.
Guyana has finished at the bottom of the points table in the last three regional First-Class tournaments and while Coach Mark Harper has again lamented the lack of longer preparation for a major game, Chanderpaul’s inclusion should be a fillip for the young side.
West Indies under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan and Windies youth team pacer Ronsford Beaton, who both played against young
Australia, will get another chance to impress at the senior level after both making their First-Class debuts this year, while former West Indies under-19 speedster Keon Joseph is also in the Guyana side.
Guyana will be without the trio of Rajendra Chandrika, Veerasammy Permaul and Test pacer Brendon Bess due to their involvement in the HPC in Barbados.
Misbah Ul Haq will lead Pakistan in the Tests after playing under Shahid Afridi in the ODI series and today’s match will give players like Younis Khan, Umar Gul and Azhar Ali who did not play in the ODI series a chance to ‘get a feel’ of local conditions ahead of the opening Test.
Mohammed Hafeez had a wonderful ODI series, while Asad Shafiq scored his maiden ton in St Lucia and along with Hammad Azam and Umar Akmal will hope for a meaningful ‘knock’ in today’s game.
Pacer Junaid Khan and Whab Riaz and Tanvir Ahmed will also want to impress with the ball as they battle for the role of new ball partner to Gul. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, leg-spinner Ali and part time off-spinner Hafeez are the spinners in the Test squad and could be keen to bowl in the Test especially if Devon Smith is re-called to open the innings with Lendl ahead of the talented Kraigg Braithwaite who many feel should make his Test debut on Thursday.
