– Officials look to complete facility
By Edison Jefford
The Wednesday deadline for the completion of the surface of the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Basketball Court has passed and according to officials, more work is still to be done to allow for competitive basketball at Linden’s most prestigious sport facility.
Sherry James, who identified herself as one of the contractors attached to the MSC project earlier this week when Kaieteur Sport visited the site, had indicated that the redone surface would have been ready for competitive basketball by Wednesday.
The contracts for relaying the surface that made up the first phase of the project, and the erection of bleachers, which comprised the second phase, were handed to separate contractors. James had noted that her work was more than 95 percent completed.
However, when this newspaper visited the venue yesterday, it was clear that more work is to be done to bring the court up to the requisite standard despite its generally improved surface. Those works will continue simultaneously with the erection of stands.
Secretary of the Sports Club, Rawle Blair, said that another layer of bitumen will be laid on what seemed to be a firm foundation. Blair informed that only the playing area of the court will be the target for levelling and smoothening as that area represents priority.
“We’ll apply another layer of bitumen so that the basketball playing area will be smooth; we are currently getting the necessary measurements for the area so that we have a professional finish to the court,” Blair said, adding that the general works have another week.
Blair admitted that there were some issues in the initial phase of the project with the bitumen and the weather. The laying of the final layer of bitumen was expected to be completed yesterday and Blair gave the surface of the court Tuesday to be ready for competition.
However, he indicated that the court ought to be fully completed before becoming accessible for competition.
He was responding to the situation of the delayed Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Championships, which was stopped in its Final Four playoffs phase for the works on the court to commence.
“We have to be reasonable and understand that when this court is completed it will benefit all of us in this community. I do not see any rush; we should wait until this court is finished before any tournament is played. These teams are always here,” Blair noted.
The construction of the second set of bleachers on the eastern half of the court has commenced and generally the aesthetics of MSC court has vastly improved.
The third phase of the project is scheduled to commence on Tuesday. This phase includes the erection of changing rooms, which are to be equipped with washrooms and lockers for the players.
