A dispute over a child caused the death of Tilack Dharry, 43, called “Chanu” or “Sono” of Third Street North Kilcoy Squatting area. The man was a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital when he died on Thursday.
His assailant, Arjoon Verasammy, 45, called ‘Dad’ is the Chairman of the Kilcoy/Chesney Community policing group. He is in police custody at the Albion Police Station.
According to the mother of the deceased, 65-year-old Jamonia Singh, on Tuesday last at 17:30 hrs she was with her daughter when she received a phone call and asked to “come quickly that Arjoon Verasammy beat up Chanu and he was left on the ground.”
The mother said that she rushed with her daughter to the scene, a few streets away and saw her son lying on the ground. She said that her son told her that “Dad beat him up and he wants to go to the doctor.”
Ms Singh recounted that she ran to the Albion Police Station where a report was made, but that the police were reluctant to accompany her back to the scene. She said that she was given a medical report to take to the hospital with her son.
When she returned to the scene, she said that residents along with relatives assisted her son into a vehicle and he was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where the nurses were reluctant to treat him. He was given several injections and sent away, the woman said
On Wednesday last Dharry was the taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. He died the following day.
The mother added that her son and Verasammy had frequent altercations but the police were never serious about arresting the accused . She said that the chairman must accept responsibility for her son’s death.
