One hour and twenty minutes of fierce football that included regulation and extra time, failed to distinguish the better team and the match between the Guyana Defence Force and Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United was eventually decided on penalty kicks when the curtains came down on the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super 4 KO final at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground Sunday evening last.
‘The Hammers’ managed to hold their nerves to register a 5-3 victory after their goalie, Ronson Williams held on to a scorcher off the boot of Kevin Lewis, while the eventual winners pierced the opposition’s goal an impeccable 5 times.
It was a robust game with the army players employing roughhouse tactics early in the first session as they attempted to surge ahead. They presented a formidable strike force that constantly invaded Alpha’s domain but good defensive work by the latter team thwarted their efforts.
Both teams then engaged in ferocious exchanges and on several occasions referee Mark Young was forced to intercede. He also doled out several yellow cards as blood boiled with players from both teams guilty of various infractions. As the battle continued in the first session, Royan Morrison collected a pass and skillfully weaved his way past the Alpha defence. After completing the bulk of the work he erred with a tame strike that glided along the side of the goal.
Dwight Peters continued to experience poor fortunes and running down the right flank and in some cases with only the goalie to contend with, squandered several straightforward opportunities. These blunders ensured that the teams went in at the end of the first session nil all.
The ghosts of the first session continued to haunt the players of both sides into the second, eliciting groans of exasperation from their respective supporters. Despite his small frame, Delwyn Fraser of the army was the natural standout. He sped along the right wing on several occasions, dexterously evading all in his path. That he was unable to convert his efforts into goals only served to cap the ill fortunes of players from both sides.
Earlier, Rosignol United defeated Milerock 2-0 to capture the third prize. Curtis Moore in the 39th minute and Tyson Carmichael in the 81st were the marksmen for the winners.
Alpha United carted off the premiere prize of $500,000 while the Guyana Defence Force won half that amount along with championship honours.
