A 21-year-old man from Victoria, East Coast Demerara, succeeded in his second attempt to end his own life when he hanged himself under his cousin’s unfinished house at the back of the village.
The body of Dwight Murphy, a former member of the Special Constabulary, was found hanging with an asbestos rope around the neck, early yesterday morning, sending shockwaves through the close-knit community.
Relatives believe that Murphy’s action stemmed from the fact that his lover had refused to make up with him after walking out of their relationship.
They informed that Murphy had ingested rat poison two months ago in an earlier attempt to commit suicide and was supposed to be subjected to counselling. However, efforts by relatives to erase the thought of suicide from his mind proved futile, as he had repeatedly threatened to do it again.
This newspaper understands that as recent as Monday, the young man hinted at suicide after another attempt to win back his lover failed.
“This problem come over girlfriend,” a relative said.
Another relative indicated that Murphy had initially intended to hang himself from a family plum tree but was prevented from doing so by relatives.
“He tell he mother he gun give she trouble. He say he gun jump off a coconut tree,” another family member remarked.
However, determined to end his life, Murphy disappeared and after a frantic search by relatives, he was only discovered yesterday morning, by which time he was already dead.
His brother, Alan Murphy, told investigators that the family received a call shortly after 06:00 hours yesterday, informing them that the man had killed himself.
A neighbour recalled seeing “something hanging in the yard next door” but did not take it for anything serious. It was not until an alarm was raised that he realised that it was a body.
The police were eventually summoned and they have launched an investigation although no marks of violence were seen on Murphy’s body.
Investigators are awaiting a post mortem examination before concluding their investigations.
